3 Mod Parts to Jumpstart Your Watch Modding

Watch Modding

Watch modding is a general practice in many watch circles. Professional watchmakers and hobbyists participate in it to show their support. In addition, many brands are aware of the practice, so they let people do this to support it.

If you are a novice at watching modding, you will need tools for modding your timepiece. Fortunately, these tools are found at home or can be bought from your nearest hardware store. It is absolutely okay to make mistakes at first.  However, if you improve through practice, you will eventually get better over time. The parts you use in watches get easier to distinguish after many mods. Here are the three most common parts you use in watch modding.

Hands

The hands in the watch are the most important parts. Not only does it determines the exact time of the day, but it is also the defining piece of the watch. You can tell the time without the numbers as long as the hands are present.

Various brands of watches use a wide variety of hands. In addition, it can be thick or thin, depending on the build.

It is also possible to have watch hands ready in case. Some models, including Seiko mod parts, have hands incompatible with specific builds. Research the watch you will mod first before you place the new hands.

Bezels

Bezels are the outer rings that encase the watch together. It can be unidirectional or bi-directional. The bezels measure time elapsed between various time zones.

The difference lies in the direction. Unidirectional bezels rotate in one direction, while bi-direction rotates clockwise and counterclockwise. Most watches can work without a bezel, so you mostly see this part in dive watches.

If you want to remove a bezel, you can use a wedged tool. You use the tool until the bezel is gone from the case. And when you place a new bezel, apply an adhesive like contact cement. Watches are delicate products, and one misstep can damage the timepiece.

Dials

Dials are the face of the watch. It is one of the first things you see in your watch along with the hands. These parts come in various colors and can be customized in accordance to your liking.

Before looking for dials, first, check the kind of watch you have first. Some dials may not look good when paired with visually incompatible parts. Therefore, you need to have a good eye for pairing up dials with watches.

The dial is also one of the trickiest parts to mod. First, you need to remove the other parts stacked to each other before getting the dial. Second, you check the part’s conditions. See if there are changes to the parts. Then, check the dial for any scratches and changes. After inspection, you can place the new dial on the watch.

Wrapping up

Watch modding takes up a lot of time and skill. You get to use many parts that comprise your timepiece.

Initially, telling the watch parts apart can be difficult, but the more you get familiar with them after continuous use, it becomes an easier endeavor. Even now, professional watchmakers have started from the bottom when it comes to their watch modding at one point in their lives.
