Everything you need to know about the construction

There is so much that happens during the construction process, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes, it’s not all about what you see on site. There are so many different jobs and stages involved, so here in this article, we will be talking about everything you need to know about construction.

Construction sites

On a construction site, you will usually find that there is some sort of project being built, usually a commercial building, housing estate or some sort of infrastructure. Sometimes materials and other parts of the construction are pre-made and are then transported to the final site.

On a construction site, you would usually find a range of workers, ranging from manual labourers right up to safety managers. All the different types of workers will usually be found on-site at the same time. Due to construction sites becoming very busy, workers must follow the health and safety rules at all times. There must be regular safety checks, and everyone must have the relevant training and experience necessary to work on the construction site.

The construction process

Depending on what is being built, most construction projects will have their own process, which may differ depending the on the build or on the client. Here we have the general construction process that you might find.

Starts with the client

Before the construction has even started, the client has a construction project idea in mind.

Client hires consultant

Once the client has decided on their project, they will hire a consultant to advise on the planning process and the designs. The costs of the project must then be calculated, as well as the kind of material used. The consultant will then work out the overall design of the construction project, whilst working out the overall cost. They will then choose the right contractor to start the work.

The consultant gets the contractor to carry out the work

The process of them choosing the best contractor will then start. The contractors will bid for the work, which means they are considering why they should be chosen to work on the project.

Subtractors

If there are any special requirements and parts that the contractor cannot provide, they may then receive help from a subcontractor. A subcontractor will usually have expert skills and knowledge, this might include things like plumbing or electrical installations.

The different phases in the construction

  1. A client plans and designs the concept, they will then call a consultant to see if this is possible to do.
  2. They will then move on to designing and planning, selecting which materials they will use and how much it will all cost. The consultant will then award the job to the contractor of their choice.
  3. The process of investigating the grounds and the condition it’s in will then be undertaken by mechanics and rock mechanics.
  4. Before construction can begin, there may have to be some demolition of any previous structures. This will always be completed by a demolition operative.
  5. The substructure, which is any of the building that is under the ground, will then be put in place. The substructure must be able to support the superstructure.
  6. A drainage engineer will then be responsible for designing the drainage systems, to make sure that everything drains correctly.
  7. The building work can begin. Although all of the above need to be signed off first before any of the building goes ahead, this is to ensure that everything is as safe as possible.
  8. Once the outer building has been completed, decorating and painting, along with any interior design work can then go ahead. If this was a housing estate, fitting the kitchens and bathrooms would be included in this part of the process,
  9. Everything that operates within the building will then be tested, to ensure that it is fit for all purposes. Any final repairs will then be made, which will then mean that the building is ready to operate efficiently and safely.
