SASSA Disability Grant – How to Apply and Check Status?

South African Social Security Agency has come forward to offer financial help to disabled citizens. There is a specific criterion to qualify for this relief program. SASSA Disability Grant Requirements

  • The certificate of medical assessment must not be older than three months. 
  • You and your spouse must pass the means test. If single, your annual income must not be more than R 86,280. Similarly, married applicants shouldn’t have an income of more than R 2,455,200.
  • The person eligible for the SASSA disability grant must not live in any state-based care center. 
  • Applicants receiving grants from other social services can’t qualify for this SASSA grant program.
  • You must have a bar-coded identity document with a valid 13-digit code. 

For under-18 disabled individuals, their guardians can apply for a SASSA care dependency grant. 

If you don’t have an identity document, you must provide documents that prove that you have applied for the papers. The affidavit must be from the Department of Home Affairs. 

How Much Amount Do You Get Under SASSA Disability Grant?

You get a maximum amount of R1,980 monthly. 

How to Apply for SASSA Disability Grant?

You can visit the nearby office of SASSA to fill out the application form.

The following documents are necessary for applying. 

  • 13-digit bar-coded ID card 
  • Medical report and assessment as proof of your disability
  • Proof of marital status, residence, source of income, any property, or pension slips 
  • Bank statement of the applicant for three months 
  • If unemployed, then UIF, Unemployment Insurance Fund document or discharge certificate from a previous job. 
  • If the applicant’s spouse is deceased, they must submit a copy of their will and initial and final accounts distribution. 

After filling out the application form and submitting the required documents, the officer will provide you with a receipt as proof. 

SASSA doesn’t accept online applications for it. Visiting the agency office is important to apply for a disability grant.

What If SASSA Rejects Your Disability Grant Application?

SASSA will send you a letter about whether they accepted or rejected your application. They will also mention the reason behind the rejection of the form. You can appeal for reconsideration of your application by writing to the Social Development Minister. However, you must take this step within 90 days of receiving the rejection notice. It takes up to three months for the application to process. The agency will start paying you the amount when they accept your application. 

SASSA Disability Grant Payment Method 

Once SASSA approves your application, the officer will ask you to select a preferred payment method from three available options. 

  • Direct cash deposit in your bank account. However, the bank applies service charges in this step.
  • You can collect cash from a specific pay point. SASSA sets particular dates for every grant for the applicants to collect cash on the spot. 
  • They can also deliver cash to an institute that’s not under the state’s responsibility. It includes a private NGO-supported home for disabled people. 

Conditions Leading to Suspension of Disability Grant

SASSA holds complete freedom to suspend your grant application if they find you involved in any of the below conditions

  • Your circumstances are not similar anymore 
  • Grant review doesn’t favor you for any reason 
  • You lack cooperation with the agency during reviewing procedure 
  • You committed a scam or provided false information or documents while applying
  • A mistake occurred during the approval of your disability grant request 

Conditions Leading to Lapse of Disability Grant 

Similar to suspension, the following aspect can be responsible for the agency taking back your grant-receiving rights. 

  • If the disabled person passes away 
  • The caretaker admits them into a state-sponsored institution 
  • If money remains unclaimed for at least three months 
  • Applicant moves to another country permanently
