Why You Need to Upgrade Your Roof Gutters: The Benefits of a Metal Roof

What you need to know about roof maintenance for homeowners

If you’re like most homeowners, you’ve probably put off the idea of upgrading your roof gutters for years. They’re just so ugly! We get it. We’re here to help you understand why you need to upgrade your roof gutters — and how easy it will be. Upgrade your gutters today and start seeing the benefits!

1. Why gutters need to be cleaned

Gutters protect your home from water damage, but if they are dirty, they don’t do their job. Clean gutters are an important part of any roofing system, but even more so if you live in a storm-prone area. They catch and channel the water to prevent flooding, erosion and damage. If you’re not sure what type of gutters you have, first determine if you have leaf blowers or not. If you do, get rid of the blowers. They don’t need to be noisy, have a battery and spray mist, and they cost too much money. Forget those! You can also check your HVAC (heat, ventilate, and air conditioning) system, which will give you a better idea of the kinds of gutters you have.

Next, determine if you need to replace your gutters annually. This will help determine the cost and schedule of any necessary work. You need to determine the life expectancy of your current gutters and the life expectancy of any work you’re going to do on them. In the picture below, you can see my gutters that were installed in 1967 and they are showing 10+ years of use.

Your gutters also need to serve their intended purpose. Common purposes are drainage, aesthetic, fire protection, cavity sealing, stream flow restriction and water diversion. Some of these are covered in more detail below.

If you installed your gutters over 100 years ago (pre-1944), you probably don’t need to worry about fire danger or cavity sealing. It’s enough to know that they need to be made of lead, certified fireproof and expect the work to last 50+ years with proper maintenance.

In the picture to the left, you can see my current Gutter Replacement system. The old gutter is over 50 years old! This is because 10+ years ago, I painted the entire 2×4 to help prevent future damage and prevent pests from laying their eggs in it. My plywood repair is due for a follow-up at the end of this year.

2. Why metal roof gutters are the best option for your home

When it comes to choosing the right gutter for your home, it can be hard to know what is best. Metal roof gutters are a great option because they are strong, durable, and long-lasting. Metal roof gutters are perfect for homes in many different regions and climates because they can withstand extreme temperatures, weather, and moisture.(We recommend those manufactured by Steelcase.)

Rooftop gutters are an even more expensive option because you can’t get them manufactured yet. They are also an advanced option, which means new and better products are coming out every year. However, installing rooftop gutters isn’t always possible because many communities are still not built with a garage ready for installing a roof, or there just isn’t enough space to properly install a new roof. That’s why installing a metal roof and metal gutters is the best decision for providing protection directly to your home!

Here are four reasons you need to upgrade your roof gutters:

Are you looking for a way to offer privacy or sun to your garden or patio in your new home? Metal roof gutters are the best choice because they keep the heat in and shield the sun or shade to encourage plants to grow. They also help your plants survive the dry winter months. Metal roof gutters will also keep the rain out, which helps prevent low humidity and prevents mold. Plus, they help ensure your garden forage lands are of good quality for your wildlife. This will make it easier for them to survive the harsh environments where we live both indoors and out.

If you’d like to install a privacy screen or an upgraded sun-drenched look in your home, metal roof gutters would be an ideal choice. However, if privacy is more of a priority for you, you can go with the easy-to-install metal roof gutters made with UV-resistant flashing instead.

Let’s look at the benefits of installing metal roof gutters:

Installation of metal gutters is costly, but architects recommend spending no more than $300 to install most gutters. However, there are many different styles and sizes available.

3. How easy it is to install metal roof gutters on your own

If you are considering installing a metal roof on your home, you might want to consider metal roof gutters as well. Installation of a metal roof is a lot easier than you might think and you can do it yourself to save money. You could hire a professional installer to do it for you, but if that’s too much money, DIY is possible and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. Remember, this is your home and you have complete control over getting this job done correctly.

Why should you gut your gutters?

Metal roof gutters allow you to brighten the outside of your home or add natural light into the space under your roof. However, there’s more! Install a metal roof and you’ll save money on energy bills, lower heating bills, and most importantly, allow you to save natural resources like solar energy and water.

We should all be concerned about climate change. Most people aren’t even aware that the great majority of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels like propane and natural gas. It’s estimated that fossil fuels account for 55% of electricity used in the US right now and this number is expected to increase.

As domestic demand for fuel increases, so does our carbon footprint. Each time we burn gas or propane to light our homes, it adds enough carbon to the atmosphere to warm the planet twice over.

A metal roof allows you to be more energy efficient by lowering demand for electricity. This will also help you avoid using energy- thirsty appliances like boilers and heaters.

The amount of money you need to invest in a metal roof depends on the materials you choose and how much power your home needs.

Conclusion: Metal roofing is a great investment in your home, and it’s easy on the eyes. Start thinking about upgrading today!

Before you interrupt me with another article about unnecessary home remodeling, let’s just cut to the chase — your gutters. Yes, you would want to replace your gutters if you’re upgrading your roof.

Remember those heavily rusted metal slats that penetrate your home when it rains and make the whole thing look like a prison? In terms of aesthetics, they’re more akin to the grille from a jalopy than the proud crest of a noble steed. They’ve tarnished and corroded with age, rusting slightly along their entire length.

While being a member of the roughly 5–6.5 million homes in the U.S. that have surveyed, they’ve never been considered for major roof replacement investments, said Richard Gifford, a senior research scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

Save for installing directly atop your roof or making small repairs, there’s nothing to indicate a need to replace them, according to Gifford. The main reason is likely because they’re not unusual at all. Of 10 types of roofs that he’s studied, he notes that gutters are “not inherently bad” but are sometimes “rarely replaced as an aesthetic option.” They usually only require simple patching or minor reconstruction.

“However, the large majority (80–95%) of homes that report in our rainwater harvesting studies that they experience rain damage generally do not seek to modify the roof,” notes Gifford. If yours is a capital-intensive home and it’s built before 1950, your gutters likely date back to the 1920s or 1930s. Additionally, he notes that “additional roof maintenance rarely is considered, with an average of 4/5 people in our studies reporting a lack of Republican National Committee or Green Party of Florida membership on their roof.
