What are the Penile Prosthesis Types?

On this page, you will be given information about the answer to the question of Penile Prosthesis Types. Penile prostheses (implants), known as Penile prostheses, are devices used in the third-line treatment of erectile dysfunction problems. In this surgical procedure, inflatable or flexible bendable rods are used. These implant rods placed in the penile and scrotum (testicle) enable individuals to regain their sexual functions.

What are the General Penile Prosthesis Types?

Penile prostheses are generally flexible or inflatable; there are two types of penile prosthesis types. Inflatable implants consist of two interconnected cylinders, a water reservoir, and a pump. These implants were first produced in 1973 to provide erection and were initially designed as a two-piece. The main difference between two-piece implants and three-piece implants is that the water reserve is not located in a separate part but directly inside the pump in the scrotum (testicle).

The emergence of bendable implants took place in the 1980s. Bendable implants, the simplest penile prostheses, are bendable rods placed directly inside the Penile.

Various factors can guide the determination of the most suitable type of Penile Prosthesis for the individual:

  • The body structure of the individual
  • Age
  • Size of penile and other genitals
  • Whether or not you have been operated on in the groin or abdomen before
  • Colostomy presence
  • General health status

Different Penile Prosthesis types and their features can be summarized as follows:

There are many types of penile prostheses of the Rigicon® brand. These are three-piece inflatable penile prostheses and one-piece penile prostheses.

Three-piece penile prostheses are available in 3 types:

  • Infla10® X Three-Piece Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (girth expansion)
  • Infla10® AX Three-Piece Inflatable Penile Prosthesis with Anatomical Expansion (girth and length expansion)
  • Infla10® NB Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (for fibrotic narrow corporal anatomies, girth expansion)

And Rigi10™ Malleable Penile Prosthesis model is available.

One Piece (Malleable) Penile Prosthesis Types

Bendable happiness sticks are penile implants that provide permanent stiffness. Thanks to being bendable, the penile can be erected before sexual intercourse, while the direction of the pen can be adjusted so that clothes can hide it at other times. The main advantages of bendable bliss sticks are more straightforward surgical insertion and ease of use.

Bendable implants consist of two flexible rods surgically inserted into the Penile. Although this type of implant is straightforward, the constant state of stiffness can sometimes cause discomfort. Due to the small number of parts used, bendable happiness rods have a lower risk of failure than other penile implants.

Two-piece Inflatable Penile Prosthesis Types

While the two-piece inflatable happiness sticks are placed in the Penile, the pump that will allow the fluid to flow into the Penile is located in the scrotum (testicle).

3-Piece Inflatable Penile Prosthesis Types

The three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis is the most commonly used type of penile implant. In these three-piece prostheses, a device that functions as a fluid reservoir is also placed in the abdomen.

The 3-piece inflatable happiness sticks are divided into two within themselves. (For detailed information, you can check the comparison table at the bottom of the page)

  • 3 Piece Inflatable Transverse Expandable Penile Prosthesis
  • 3-Piece Inflatable Transverse Longitudinal Expandable Penile Prosthesis*

*The urology physician should decide on the suitability of 3-piece inflatable happiness bars, which can expand in width and length.

After the pump is activated, the liquid in the chamber inside the abdomen passes into the cylinders and enables the Penile to reach the erection state. After sexual intercourse, the pump, which functions as a valve in the scrotum (testicle), can be squeezed, and thus the fluid in the cylinders can be returned to the chamber in the abdomen. With the withdrawal of the liquid inside, the penile regains its loose structure. The success rate in individuals with Penile Prosthesis varies between 90-95%.

The stiffness obtained with penile implants is similar to the natural erection state. After using the prosthesis, there is no change in the skin sensation, and therefore, there is no decrease in the sexual satisfaction the people. Ejaculation (hardening) is another issue that is not affected after using Penile Prosthesis. However, as with any surgical procedure, it should be conscious that bleeding, infection, scar tissue formation, and mechanical problems may occur.
