Fall Heating Preparation : Get Your Heating System Ready For Winter

As the weather starts to cool and we begin to think about turning on our furnaces, it’s important to do some fall maintenance to ensure everything is in good working order. This includes checking the filters, testing the thermostat, and making sure there are no drafts coming into the home. By taking a little time now to do some simple maintenance, we can avoid any issues when we need our furnace most – in the dead of winter!

When Should I Turn My Furnace on in the Fall?

The most common advice is to set your furnace to come on automatically at a comfortable temperature about 20 minutes before you wake up in the morning. But is this really the best time to turn on your furnace? Here are a few things to consider:

-What is the outside temperature like in the morning? If it’s cool enough, you may not need to have your furnace on at all. You can open up some windows and let the fresh air in while you get ready for the day.

-How cold does your house get during the night? If it gets down into the 60s or lower, you may want to consider turning your furnace on a little earlier in order to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. -Do you have any pets that need extra warmth? If so, you’ll want to make sure they’re taken care of by turning on your furnace earlier in the day.

-Do you have any family members with health conditions that require a warm environment? Again, you’ll want to make sure they’re taken care of by turning on your furnace earlier rather than later.

In general, it’s best to err on the side of caution and turn your furnace on earlier rather than later. Being ready early will save you troubles like burning smells from your furnace in the winter. This way, everyone in your household will be comfortable and safe as temperatures start to drop.

How to maintain my furnace in fall?

As the weather gets colder and winter approaches, now is the time to start thinking about furnace maintenance. By taking some simple steps now, you can help ensure that your furnace is running efficiently and safely all winter long. Here are a few tips for fall furnace maintenance:

  1. Schedule a professional tune-up. This is the best way to ensure that your furnace is in good working order. A professional technician will clean and inspect your furnace, and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.
  2. Change your air filter regularly. A dirty air filter can cause your furnace to work harder than it needs to, which wastes energy and raises your utility bills. Check your filter monthly and change it as needed.
  3. Keep the area around your furnace clean and clear of clutter. Furnaces need adequate ventilation to work properly, so make sure there’s nothing blocking the vents or intake grilles on your unit. By following these simple tips, you can help keep your furnace running smoothly all winter long!
