Death

When tragedy struck, John Candy had just finished filming a new comedic western called Wagons East. He was 43 years old when he was discovered dead on the set in Durango, Mexico. According to a subsequent story, the actor reportedly had a heart attack while sleeping.

John Candy smoked a lot and struggled with his weight for his whole career. He left behind a wife named Rosemary and Jennifer and Christopher, two children. John Candy was a veteran of more than 40 movies, a devoted sports enthusiast, and a co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts, a team in the Canadian Football League.

Along with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi, he was the co-owner of the House of Blues network of blues clubs and eateries. The entertainment community deeply lamented John Candy’s loss, admired his warmth and compassion in the business, and had a singular comic genius.

According to a Maclean contributor, John Candy “may be a great comedian. But what made him special was compassion, a soft emotional sincerity that easily won people around.”
