Medanta’s Dr Bornali Datta launches Breathe

At a time when worsening air pollution, rising respiratory illnesses and health misinformation are making lung health an increasing public concern, Dr Bornali Datta, Director, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Medanta Gurugram, has launched Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life, an accessible guide to understanding, protecting and caring for one of the body’s most vital, yet often overlooked, organs.

Drawing on 27 years of clinical and public health experience, Breathe brings medical knowledge closer to everyday life through easy-to-read real-life patient stories, anecdotes, illustrations and practical health information. The book explores major respiratory conditions including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, COVID-19, sleep apnoea and tuberculosis, helping readers understand their causes, symptoms, treatment and preventive measures in clear and accessible language.

Through stories from her clinical practice, Dr Datta also highlights the importance of recognising warning signs early and seeking timely medical attention. The book examines how everyday choices and exposures – from cigarettes and vapes to exercise, vaccination and travel – can influence respiratory health and the way people breathe and live.

“Breathing is something most of us take for granted until it becomes difficult. Through this book, I wanted to make understanding our lungs and the illnesses that affect them less intimidating and more accessible. My hope is that readers will be able to recognise important warning signs, ask informed questions and better understand the medical advice they receive. Ultimately, Breathe is about helping people appreciate and care for something fundamental to life—every breath we take,” said Dr Bornali Datta, Director, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Medanta Gurugram.

Published by Bloomsbury India, Breathe: A Lesson in Lungs and Life will be available from September 15, 2026. Written for patients, caregivers and anyone seeking to better understand respiratory health, Breathe aims to bridge the gap between complex medical information and everyday decision-making.

Dr Datta is a senior pulmonologist and public health professional who has been associated with Medanta – since 2010. She previously authored In a Better Place: A Doctor’s Journey, published by Bloomsbury India in 2022.
