The Canadian Football League (CFL) is a professional American football league. It is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. The league consists of 12 teams: the American Football Conference (AFC) East and West divisions with 4 teams each; and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football conference with 7 teams.

The CFL was formed in 1954 as a combination of Canada’s two major professional football leagues, the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and the Canadian National Rugby League (CNRL). The IRFU was originally composed of teams from Ontario and Quebec, while the CNRL consisted of teams primarily from British Columbia. In 1956, Ottawa and Montreal entered league play. The eight original teams then played each other twice every season, with a final game determining who won their division. Crossover games began as more teams were added to both leagues over the years.

In 1958, for example, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats played in a cross-over game against the Toronto Argonauts. The league underwent some changes over the years; in 1990, Ottawa and BC joined to create a nine-team league, while Calgary and Edmonton left to join the Canadian Football League (CFL) as expansion teams. The CFL began its television network in 2007, with TSN2 becoming the first cable channel to broadcast professional American football in Canada live coast-to-coast.
