Electric vehicles promise a more ecological transport system than previous combustion engines. However, there are still a few hurdles to be overcome before electro-mobility actually becomes a mass market. Questions about the compatibility of the charging standards and uniform technical specifications have still not been finally clarified, which, among other things, also makes testing the charging infrastructure more difficult. In addition, more and more new functions are being added, such as smart charging, automatic connection devices, or high-performance charging. Industry and standardization bodies are now struggling to integrate new features into official standards and specifications, while also ensuring backward compatibility.

Why charging station compatibility is still an issue?

As the battery capacity of newer mid-range EVs reaches 60 to 80 kWh, range anxiety plays a less and less role. But this superior range and the aforementioned rapid growth in total public EV charging stations installations mean that e-mobility will now conquer the global mass market when the implementation is sufficiently mature. In order to make cars with internal combustion engines completely superfluous, e-vehicles have to have a really long range. To do this, an EV owner must be able to rely on the next charging station on his route being operational and compatible with his vehicle. This may sound trivial, but in reality, it is very complex to implement.

Outlook on the near future of charging stations for electric vehicles

While the focus is on today’s interoperability challenges, the e-mobility market is already embracing new developments and technologies to achieve two overarching goals: going mass-market and going green. The aim is to offer e-drivers a comfortable experience when charging their e-vehicle that is comparable to the well-known refueling of combustion engines. Relevant terms in this case are easy to access and the most automated possible communication between the electric vehicle and the charging station, as well as the shortest possible charging time.
